The Story Thus Far:
Somewhere in the wilds of the Zangarmarsh, a young kal’dorei huntress finds herself besieged by a thief, a druid desperately trying to steal away the Orb she had recently found. After a scuffle, he helps her realize that the Orb is, in fact, a dangerous influence, one that muddles her mind and is trying to lead her to its own mysterious end.
Introducing himself as Rhese, the charming druid convinces young Nysse to both hand over the Orb and meet him at the tavern in Shattrath to get better acquainted. That evening, they spend a short time learning about each other before Rhese’s teammate, Valerio, interrupts their dinner to summon Rhese back to duty.
The next day, Nysse’s quiet duties at the Cenarion Refuge are interrupted by a priestess storming into camp, seeking help for her injured companion and more under attack out in the forest. To the huntress’ great surprise, the injured companion is none other than Rhese’s friend, Valerio. Concerned for her new (and charming and handsome) friend, she sets out into the swamp to lend her aid.
Nysse finds Rhese in a desperate situation – alone, injured and facing off against an entire party of hostile attackers. Together, they manage to fend off his enemies, but the druid is exhausted and muddled, affected by the pack full of Orbs he carries. When Nysse tries to assist him back to the Cenarion Refuge, he balks, insisting that they must take the orbs to Shadowmoon Valley.
Against her better judgement, Nysse accepts his direction, but just as they reach the border of the Valley, they are intercepted by the rest of Rhese’s team. Calinea, Maxinquay and Valerio manage to convince the two nightelves that the idea of taking the Orbs to Shadowmoon is false, inserted into Rhese’s mind by the Orbs he was carrying. They return to the Refuge, taking turns carrying the mind-warping bag of collected Orbs.
At the Cenarion Refuge, the team reports in to the Circle’s leadership, where they begin the process of analyzing the mission’s failure and their new course of action. At Nysse’s insistence, the young huntress is allowed to join Calinea and the Orb-hunting team. Her own heightened sensitivity to the Orbs’ “voice” makes her both uniquely capable of tracking them and uniquely susceptible to their control. They all agree that it is a phenomenon that could clarify their understanding of the mysterious Orbs, and Calinea asks Rhese to escort Nysse to the research team studying the Orbs in the Moonglade.
After a long, stressful journey, Rhese introduces the young huntress to his druid elder, Verune, and his assistants, Ashanderei and Auura. The scientist begins by grilling Nysse for information, a process that consumes the rest of the day. The huntress and her companion end the evening on the banks of Lake Elune’ara, where Nysse admits her fear of the Orbs and what the next day’s experiments might bring.
As it turns out, her fears are more than justified. The next day, after a series of tests involving warding methods designed to protect against the Orbs’ influence, they learn the extent to which she is vulnerable. A particularly ineffective ward results in Nysse’s mind being subsumed by the intelligence in the Orb. Rhese and Verune learn cryptic hints of its source, its purpose and its interest in the kaldorei huntress and those who are similarly “sensitive”:
"I was created for the Old One’s purposes. They require a vessel. I require this receptive one. She is tuned to the old ways… the great machine. This vessel will take me there to reset this world. There she will power the new life… The vessel is the lifegiver to reseed after the cleansing. Then all will be in balance. We create balance when there is none."
Later that night, the pair found out just how far the Orbs’ influence could spread and how desperately they wanted Nysse when the huntress was tricked and attacked by one of the more self-aware Taken… as well as about half of the druids of Nighthaven. Against overwhelming odds and an old ally turned enemy, with Nysse already buried under the control of the Circle’s Orb, Rhese played the turncoat long enough to find out exactly what the Orbs were planning and what they wanted Nysse and those like her for.
Desperate to keep her out of their clutches, he sacrificed his own freedom to send her back to Darnassus on his hearthstone. Nysse reluctantly left, but not without a promise to return with whatever army it takes to free him. Luckily, there was one waiting for her when she arrived…
